Why you should own a GMT watch, by J.S. Drake

12/12/2023

The GMT watch, or Greenwich Mean Time watch, is a timepiece that has become an essential accessory for many individuals around the world. Its functionality and design have stood the test of time, making it a versatile and stylish addition to any wardrobe. This is an extremely oversimplified peek, I could write a book on this subject. But for now, let's take a quick look into the history of the GMT watch, its features, and why everyone should consider owning one.

A brief and simplified history

Now referred to as UTC (universal time coordinated) or Zulu time, prior to the 1970s the standard time used to coordinate things that were happening across multiple time zones was referred to as Greenwich Mean Time.  The GMT watch retains its name among watchmakers and enthusiasts to this day. The history of the GMT watch can be traced back to the early to mid-20th century when aviators began to explore the skies in greater numbers, at further distances, and in faster airplanes. As air travel became more common, the need for watches that could display multiple time zones simultaneously became apparent. Over the years, the GMT watch has evolved to become a popular accessory among a wide range of individuals, from world travelers and business professionals to outdoor enthusiasts, military personnel, and collectors. Today, there are countless variations of the classic GMT watch available from various manufacturers, each offering unique designs, features, and functions.

Very simplified features and functions of a GMT Watch

The primary feature of a GMT watch is, of course, the ability to display multiple time zones simultaneously. This is achieved through the addition of a 24-hour hand that circles the dial every 24 hours (obviously), this 24-hour hand is generally synchronized with Greenwich Mean Time. Setting the GMT function on a watch depends on the model and function of the watch movement (mechanism). In general, as a pilot who uses GMT (zulu time) regularly, this is how I set mine as a personal preference. I first set the standard time and date like any other watch on the 12-hour face. Then ensure the 24-hour bezel (outer ring) is set to the 12-hour watch face (if your outer bezel rotates, some do not) with midnight at the 12 o'clock position and noon at the 6 o'clock position. Once the bezel is positioned, set the GMT hour hand to the current GMT hour. Now you have two time zones. Of course, if you don't need to know what time it is in Greenwich, you can set any other time zone you want. I mean, it's your watch, use it how it makes sense for you. If you live in Denver and you need to coordinate with Malaysia, then go for it. There is a more complicated way to do this though, if you really understand the function. Set the watch as I said before, (local time and GMT as normal) and if you know the time zone offset for the time zone you need, rotate the 24-hour bezel so that the hour difference from GMT is at the 12 o'clock position. The time for that time zone will be shown by the 24-hour hand. That's a little more advanced, but sometimes you want to know what time it is in Somalia quickly without resetting your watch.

In addition to the GMT function, many modern GMT watches also feature other useful things such as date displays, chronographs, compasses, etc. Most watches even have luminescent dial markers and hands, allowing the wearer to read the time in low-light conditions. The materials used in the construction of a GMT watch can also vary greatly, from stainless steel and titanium to precious metals like gold and platinum. These watches can be battery-powered or automatic (mechanical). My preference for just about any watch is automatic self-winding to include my GMT watches. While battery-powered quartz watches are far more accurate, there is something kind of relaxing and nostalgic about having to wind your watch every once in a while. That being said, just about every self-winding automatic watch loses or gains time, even super expensive watches. so If you're not into the nostalgia, there's nothing wrong with buying a quartz watch.

Why Everyone Should Own a GMT Watch

Owning a GMT watch offers several advantages, making it a valuable addition to anyone's collection.

1. With its synchronization to a second time zone, a GMT watch provides unparalleled flexibility in timekeeping. This is especially important for individuals who frequently travel across multiple time zones or have dealings in different parts of the world.
2. Setting and adjusting a GMT watch is relatively simple, even for those who are not familiar with watch mechanics. The 24-hour bezel provides a clear and intuitive method for selecting the desired time zone.
3. Style and Versatility: GMT watches come in a variety of designs and materials, making it easy to find one that suits your personal style. Whether you prefer a classic, understated look or a more bold and eye-catching design, there is a GMT watch that is perfect for you.
4. Durability and Reliability: Typically constructed with high-quality materials and engineering, a GMT watch is built to withstand the rigors of daily wear and tear. Many watches in this category are designed to resist water, shock, and other environmental hazards within certain ranges, ensuring that they will provide years of reliable service.
5. Collectibility: As with fine timepieces, owning the right GMT watch can be an excellent investment. Many collectors seek out rare or limited-edition models, driving up the resale value of these watches.

In conclusion, the GMT watch is a great accessory for anyone who values style and versatility. The multiple time zone capabilities and generally durable construction make it an ideal choice for travelers, professionals, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. With so many options available on the market today, there has never been a better time to add a GMT watch to your collection.
